The Olympics: "Faster, Higher, Stronger"

Congratulations to Canada’s Andre De Grasse who won GOLD yesterday in the Men’s 200m with a time of 19.62 seconds making him the first Canadian to win gold in the 200m since Percy Williams in 1928!!

Joseph Foreman at the 1956 Olympics.

Most Foreman descendants are unaware that Joseph Foreman (1933-1999) also competed in the Olympics in the 200m race in 1956!

In 1956, the 200m race had 67 competitors from 32 countries. The gold medal went to Bobby Morrow of the United States who had a time of 20.75 seconds establishing a new World Record at the time.

Joseph Foreman’s personal best was 21.5 seconds at the time of the 1956 Olympics and would have easily put him into the finals. (Bobby Morrow ran 21.9 seconds in the Heat 9 qualifying race)

However, in Heat 8 in 1956, Joe ran 22.8  seconds finishing fourth in his heat and not qualifying for the quarter finals ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athletics_at_the_1956_Summer_Olympics_–_Men%27s_200_metres )

Joseph Foreman is remembered in track history because: "He tied legendary Canadian Olympic champion Percy Williams' record for the 100-metre dash in 1955, then established a national record in the 200-metre dash that stood for five years." (Source Toronto Star)

"Faster, Higher, Stronger"

When Joseph Foreman died in 1999  "... to commemorate Foreman’s competitive spirit, (wife) Sylvia and (son) Jonathan inscribed the Olympic motto on his tombstone. It reads ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius.’ Faster, higher, stronger."

Faster, higher, stronger is what we all witnessed this week with Andre De Grasse's historic win in 2021! Congratulations Andre De Grasse!! Faster indeed!
