Part IV: Historical Books: Canada Lands Index

On December 18, 2017, the Ontario Land Registry built a web portal (https://www.onland.ca/ui/) to deliver key statutory services relating to land and property ownership in Ontario to land registry professionals and the public.

These online land records are gold mine of information for genealogists with ancestors in Ontario.

This post, Part IV,  is about the Canada Lands Index which contains plans of public lands under the Canada Lands Surveys Act, Navigable Waters Protection Act, Transfers of Jurisdiction and Control, Indian Reserves and National Parks. Of the 53 Land Registry Office records online, only 17 (highlighted below) had Historical Books / Canada Lands Index records.

This post, Part IV, is an Index of sorts to the 53 Land Registry Offices in Ontario and I indicate below IF they even have a "Canada Lands Index" book online and I summarize ALL of the historical books that are available online in this new OnLand resource.

When I searched for "Essex County" in the "Historical Books; Canada Land Index", there were two books:
I turned my attention to the Land Registry Office "Peel" to see if it contained more results than the Essex county book but Peel did not even have a "Canada Land Index: and the only two historical land books that were available to browse For Peel were the  Abstract/Parcel Register Book and the By-Law Index.

As I checked the "Canada Lands" books, they did not seem to be a helpful resource for genealogists. The exception to this would be items such as "List of Reserves" (see Manitoulin below) and the expropriations (see Halton County below). If surveys related o Reserves or expropriations are important to your research, these books my offer additional insight.

Retake Books

Retakes are rescanned pages of documents that were not viewable in the initial scanned version of the document. These pages must be searched and viewed separately from the document itself.

Almost ALL 53 LROs have "Retake Books"  so if you are finding an illegible pages in your searches, check these documents.

In Essex County. I looked at the "Retake Book" andd there were three books

  3. PLAN M74

52 Ancestors: Week 2: Favourite Photograph

52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks was created by Amy Johnson Crow and is a series of weekly prompts to inspire genealogists and family historians to think and write about an ancestor and then share it online.


I have been participating in Amy's 52 Ancestors challenge since 2014, so I thought I would look back and revisit some of my previous posts about photographs.

In 2015, I posted  52 Ancestors No. 14: A Favourite Photo: My Grandparent's 1929 Wedding 

In 2014, I wrote a LOT about photographs:
Suffice to say that I have MANY, many favourite photographs and to narrow it down to just one favourite is quite literally impossible.

Today, I want to share one photograph that I have framed and always featured on a bookshelf near my favourite chair. It is a photograph of me, my great-grandmother Mary Elizabeth (Broderick) Moynahan (1869-1960) and my dear cousin Lorri. I love this photo because it is a photograph of the only great-grandparent alive when I was born and her hugging me and my dear cousin Lorri!

Sadly, all of my other great- grandmothers had passed at least a decade before I was born.
 And, in terms of all my great-grandfathers, they too had all passed long before I was born.
Here are the images of some of my great-grandparents whom I never met (Except for Mary Elizabeth (Broderick) Moynahan)

And here is the photograph of the only great-grandparent that I was blessed to meet.

Mary is ninety-one years old in this photograph. In all other photograpghs of her, she was a big woman, "hale and hearty" as they would say, just like her mother before her (Mary Hussey 1841-1913) 

In this picture she is at her most frail but still strong enough to squeeze and hold me at the waist and hold my cousin Lorri on her lap.

The photograph was taken on her porch at 539 Campbell Ave., Windsor Ontario.

I have to say that I have had a life-long love of paisley and I can't help but wonder what Mary's beautiful paisley dress would have looked like in colour.

Researching the Broderick branches of my family tree has been incredibly exciting and rewarding, especially learning about Mary's father Martin Broderick (1831-1915) in the Fenian raids and her mother Mary Hussey's (1841-1913) promise to leave Ireland and meet her love in the Americas.

Oh how I wish I could have asked great-grandmother Broderick SO may questions about her life and her family. But I was just a wee little girl and so incredibly lucky to have received her love and hugs.

Part I: OnLand Records: Historical Books: First Registration Book

On December 18, 2017, the Ontario Land Registry built a web portal (https://www.onland.ca/ui/) to deliver key statutory services relating to land and property ownership in Ontario to land registry professionals and the public.

This is a gold mine of information for genealogists with ancestors in Ontario.

This post, Part IV,  is about the First Registration books which contain a list of first registrations from registry to land titles (e.g. Crown Patent or Crown plan).

Here is a walk-through of how I found the records for my 4th great-grandfather Matthew Moynahan (1770-1860) who lived in Maidstone (known originally as Sandwich), Ontario.

I started by selecting the "Essex" Land Registry Office and then "Browse First Registration Book".

The Index was 357 pages and the subsections were as follows
  • Anderdon: pages 3 - 23
  • Colchester: pages 25 - 59
  • Gosfield: pages 61 - 93
  • Kingsville: page 95
  • Maidstone: pages 96 - 122
  • Malden: pages 124 - 134
  • Pelee: page 170
  • Rochester: pages 172 - 188
  • Sandwich: pages 190 - 259
  • Tilbury West: pages 260 - 284
  • Amherstburg: pages 285 - 318
  • Colchester: pages 321 - 333
  • Sandwich: pages 335 - 354
By scrolling page by page, I found my 4th great-grandfather Matthew Moynahan on page 255 (of 357) of 296 North Talbot Road, Sandwich.

I noted in the description for Mathew Moynihan/Minehan "des, 521" and "des, 548" so I returned to the previous page and selected Book 3 which covered Crown Patents: 476 to 662.

Definitions

What Are Crown Patents ?

Land patents were issued by the Crown to the first owner, to confirm the transfer of ownership. They include a description of the land granted, and may include legal restrictions or conditions.

What Are Crown Plans?

Using the name of the township or town, you can find Patent Plan images at the Archives of Ontario (RG 1-100) with a keyword search in the Archives of Ontario’s Visual Database.

List of:  Ontario Government Record Series RG 1-100;  Patent plans (alphabetical)

Here is how I found the Crown Plans for my 4th great-grandfather Matthew Moynahan. In the Archives of Ontario, Visual Database RG 1-100 I searched "Sandwich" and it displayed seven results.

Lucky for me, 4th great-grandfather Matthew was found on the first result RG 1 - 100 - 0 - 0 - 2458



When viewing results from searches in the Archives Descriptive Database, please look for a camera icon beside the search results. Clicking the CAMERA icon will open a corresponding image in the Archives Visual Database.

There is a magnifier on the page or you can just open a larger image to view all of the names. Magnified below is my 4th great-grandfather Mathew Moynahan/Minahan

Part II: OnLand Records: Historical Books: Abstract / Parcel Register Book

Back in the 1980s when I started my genealogical research, I remember hanging out in the Land Registry office in Windsor to get copies of records that I was interested in about my Essex county ancestors. I was so intimidated and not sure of what was there.

Today, I am very grateful to members Cathy Armstrong and Nancy Vaillancourt (of the Simcoe and Sudbury Branch Ontario Genealogical Society respectively) who shared a link to newly published FREE searchable Ontario Land Property Records (OnLand) online https://www.onland.ca/ui/

On December 18, 2017, the Ontario Land Registry announced:
"Teranet, in partnership with Service Ontario, has built this web portal to deliver key statutory services relating to land and property ownership in Ontario to land registry professionals and the public.

The first phase of the web portal offers customers the opportunity to test out the historical land registration book search and view option only. Customers will still be required to visit a land registry office to print any records. For more information on Historical Books, please click here.

We will provide an update when full search capabilities are available on OnLand in late 2018.

When fully implemented, OnLand will allow users to search historical and current property records, anywhere in the province, from the convenience of your home or office, instead of visiting a land registry office." (Source: http://help.onland.ca/en/onland-is-here/)

What is a Historical Book?

From the website:
"Historical books, previously only available for consultation at a Land Registry Office (LRO), contain the original paper property records registered prior to the introduction of Ontario’s electronic land registration system. These records are now available electronically through OnLand’s Historical Books Search or Browse features.

When you search in the Historical Books section, you can view the PDFs of scanned abstracts and parcel registers, a variety of indices, and first registration records. Learn more about the types of records you can obtain through the Historical Books digital library."

Historical Book Categories

These are the types of records that can be viewed by searching or browsing in Historical Books (red highlights and comments beside the records that I will write about in future posts):
  • Abstract/Parcel Register Book: Registry abstracts, land title parcel registers, registry and land titles condominium registers, miscellaneous abstracts containing other title information.

Part I: Historical Books: Abstract/Parcel Register Book

In this Part I, I decided to start exploring this "Abstract/ Parcel Register Book" by looking for records for my 4th great-grandfather Matthew Moynahan (1770-1860)

 Matthew is my oldest known Moynahan ancestor in Ontario.  Matthew died on the 3rd of February 1860 on the farm that he had built in Essex county, Ontario.

My 4th great-grandfather Matthew Moynahan was one of several Moynahans who were settled by Col. Thomas Talbot in the late 1820s and early 1830s.

Searching by Geographic/Property Description
 
I know that Matthew was located by Col. Talbot on 296 North Talbot Road, Sandwich, Ontario (to become Maidstone township later) in Essex county.

From the landing page, I selected "ESSEX,

Then I selected "Abstract/Parcel Register Book"and I selected "Concession" and then "Lot" and I entered in "296" for Matthews "296 North Talbot Road, Sandwich, Ontario"

What Did I Find?

It was a scan of "electrostatic copies of the entries of all instruments recorded before January 30, 1981 for Lot 296 North Talbot Road, Township of Sandwich South, and that, as of the date hereof, this book is the current abstract index for the above mentioned land"

It had every transaction that had occurred on my 4th great-grandfathers Matthew Moynahan's property Lot 296 North Talbot Road from the initial patent being granted in 1846 to 1981.

52 Ancestors: Week 1: Start

This blog began in 2014 and I owe a great deal of gratitude for the inspiration behind many of my posts to Amy Crow's 2014 blogging challenge that she called "52 Ancestors"

I am so delighted to learn that Amy Crow has recently decided to run "52 Ancestors" again in 2018 (after a brief two-year hiatus that she announced at the end of 2015. )

The theme for Week 1 of "52 Ancestors 2018" is "START" and I thought I would reflect on the many benefits that I have received by participating in  Amy's 2014 and 2015 challenges and hopefully encourage other genealogists to START the 2018 challenge with me.

  5. Your DNA Matches Will Love It! I am really new to the DNA world and I am managing my father's DNA matches. Whenever I connect with a DNA match, I locate the "52 Ancestor" blog posts and share it. I have even been contacted by a reader of a particular blog post to see if I have DNA results to share!
  6. You Will Find Gaps In Your Research: This is the most helpful of all. In having to explain your findings in a blog post, you will likely find some gaps in it as well.
